Family Life Balance

Session 1 Overview

Month 1: Motherhood and Identity - Reconnecting with Who You Are
“Sometime between sleep deprivation, toilet training and homework, the question ‘who am I now?’ will surface for just about every mother.” Learn to appreciate where you are at right now; explore your values, goals and dreams.

Month 2: The Transformative Power of Self-Care
“Self-care is about nurturing yourself on all levels –physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually – so you can live, love and parent optimally.” You’ll discover specific ways to make self-care a priority in your life, and explore your deep-seated beliefs on this issue – not to mention the external feedback from society and other people!

Month 3: Creating Your Personal Support System
“I started to notice that people I really admired – those who seemed to experience more balance, integration and true emotional health and resiliency – had strong support systems in place and were comfortable stating their needs and asking others for help. I didn’t think they were weak at all – I really admired them!” Learn concrete ways to build your own support system. Do you feel like you should be able to do it ALL, by yourself?

Month 4: Managing Your Energy & Good is Good Enough
“We each have a finite amount of energy, time and resources. Most of us ‘give away’ and waste our energy every day without even realizing it... What we often don’t realize is that these activities deplete our valuable energy bank.” It’s really about living consciously – making decisions about how we spend our time based on what OUR values and priorities are, not what society’s or your neighbor’s or the PTA president’s values or priorities are... This meeting will help each of us focus on how to create healthy boundaries in our lives, to focus our energy and resources on what matters most to us.

Month 5: Good Is Good Enough: A Mother’s Mantra
“I changed my attitude from ‘I want everything to be the best it can be’ to the healthier and much more human mantra, ‘good is good enough.’” Most of us struggle with this - society, the media, comparing ourselves to others, and our own extremely high and often unrealistic expectations all cause us to feel that we’re never doing enough, or doing it perfectly enough... You’ll find great comfort in hearing from other Moms about this topic, and learning what to let go of, and ‘when to say when.’

Month 6: Let Your Light Shine - Owning Your Personal Power
“Thinking about self-love may feel strange or narcissistic. It certainly wasn’t something that was taught or discussed when most of us were growing up. But it is essential to feeling whole, confident and emotionally resilient. Without it, we aren’t really in a place that enables and encourages us to give to others.” Somehow, many women have a core belief: I’m not worth it. They may feel they’re not worthy of taking time, or money, or other resources for themselves... it feels self-indulgent, and therefore wrong.

Session 2 Overview

 Month 1: Unleashing Your Creativity
“As a mom, a great way to nurture or reconnect with who you are is to re-engage in a creative activity you haven’t tried in a while (or start something new). Nothing makes us feel more vibrant than tapping into the creative flow.” What activities bring you pure joy? What stimulates your creative juices? When do you experience “flow” in your life?

Month 2: Outrageous Living: Reclaiming Adventure in Your Life
“Experiencing and embracing our adventurous selves – whether that means skydiving or trying a Vietnamese restaurant – is a marvelous way to reconnect with and nurture our essence. ... Pushing ourselves a little outside of our comfort zones can be healthy and invigorating.” Some people have stronger comfort zones than others... but everyone can benefit from stretching the limits, gently, yet firmly and regularly. It keeps fear (of the unknown, of failing, etc.) from running your life!

Month 3: Changing Relationships: Staying Connected
“It all goes back to the question: what relationships feed me (and which ones drain me), and what do I need to feel nurtured and supported to live my best life?” Most marriages struggle after having a baby, for so many reasons: lack of resources (money, time, patience, energy, attention and so on), stress and sleep-deprivation, navigating new roles, and many more. We all know that the best thing for your children is a great marriage, but how do you DO that, on a daily basis? And what about other critical relationships in your life - friends, siblings, in-law’s...? Explore ways to keep your key relationships strong and healthy, while minimizing the effect of those that drain you.

Month 4: Motherhood as a Spiritual Journey
“Regardless of your personal beliefs, spiritual self-care is essential to your overall well-being. It’s about feeling centered, nurturing your essence, enhancing inner strength, living in integrity, trusting, experiencing a connection to a higher power, feeling a sense of purpose and finding meaning in your life.” There’s nothing quite like having a child to make you wonder, what’s it all about? Why are we here? And other big questions, that seem especially looming when you’re hormonal and sleep-deprived (or dealing with a hormonal and sleep-deprived teenager). This session will be like enjoying a delicous, refreshing, cool drink of water for the thirsty soul.

Month 5: Reclaim Your Life: Strategies for Balance
"I have found it helpful to look at approaching and defining balance as having enough time, energy and resources for those things in life that are most important to you.” The Guide and the PRG will focus on four key strategies for achieving a healthy balance in your life: setting priorites and managing your energy, taking time for self-renewal, building a support network, and being more present in your life. Let your PRG help you implement these strategies into your own life!

Month 6: Being Present and Remembering What Really Matters
“Most of us were never taught that being is just as important as doing. Slow down. Take time to really soak up life. I think most mothers will agree: we want to teach our kids that we value them for who they are, not for what they do.”

The quotes above are brief excerpts from The Mother’s Guide to Self-Renewal: How to Reclaim, Rejuvenate and Re-Balance Your Life.
